Brighton Morris Men and Shirley Collins

Along with many in the world of English traditional music and song, we have been great fans of Shirley Collins MBE for years.

And she of us. When we dance in her home town of Lewes there is always a good chance that Shirley will be there to watch us. We were honoured when Shirley agreed to be our patron.

In 2008 Shirley was invited to curate a weekend of concerts on the South Bank in London under the title ‘Folk Roots New Routes’. She asked us to join her.

In 2015 we were invited once again, this time to join in Shirley’s 80th birthday celebrations on the South Bank.

Then came the news that Shirley was recording for the first time in 38 years. Two Brighton Morris members were involved in those sessions. This became Lodestar, her triumphant return to the public stage.

Now her story is told in the film ‘The Ballad of Shirley Collins’. We danced for Shirley at the invitation of Lewes Depot Cinema at the first screening of the film in Lewes in November 2017.
